Ketchup and Other Condiments

I hope you are enjoying Bug Pudding. This strip was a lot of fun to create as it is one of those times when the characters break the fourth wall. I always enjoyed the times when the characters in cartoons like Rocky and Bullwinkle would talk back to the off screen narrator. In comic strips it is occasionally fun to let the characters poke fun at some of the conventions of the media like panel borders, speech balloons and narration boxes. See you again next Tuesday when as Rockford requested, we get this circus back on the road.

On a side note, I never know what to call the stuff that we pour all over our french fries, catsup or ketchup. But then I’m not really sure about the difference between fries and chips either.

Breaking the “fourth wall!” Well done! (Careful they don’t turn on you! :D )

Nice. I love breaking the 4th wall. There’s a scene in the movie “Trading Places” where Eddy Murphy does a deadpan look at the camera. Never fails to crack me up. Just remember if you break it you own it.

  3. Thanks guys,
This was one of those strips that just sort of wrote itself. Sometimes I just start hearing the characters as they interact and so for some reason when I was doing this strip they must have heard me thinking out loud and responded. They do seem to take on a life of their own.

Panel 1
Narrator:
For those who stopped to buy popcorn and came in late…..
Separated from the others, Agile meets Rockford, a talking rock, who convinces Agile to take him along to help rescue the bug’s friends who are being held prisoner by that nasty squirrel Doctor “B”.
Meanwhile, Monroe is running around in full panic mode and finally climbs up in and old dead tree. While Bentley is trying to talk Monroe down, Agile, carrying Rockford in a back pack, arrives to help. But gravity and the rotten tree work best to solve Monroe’s nesting problem.

Agile reveals the evil secrets of the smart phones and asks Bentley once more to join him on his mission to rescue the other bugs. It is also revealed that Rockford is their only guide to find the squirrel’s hideout. And so …

Panel 2
Monroe:
Who is that guy and how does he know so much?
Bentley:
Maybe we should ask this narrator guy for some directions.
Agile:
Probably some washed-up ink-slinger with nothing better to do!
Rockford:
I’m not getting any younger in this bag… let’s get this circus on the road!
